7 Olympian Shooting Tips

2

US Olympic shooters Vincent Hancock and Kim Rhode have made us proud with their excellent shooting skills that helped bring home the gold. No doubt they’ve spent countless hours, and rounds of ammo, to become the best in the world. Here’s a few tips posted over at National Skeet Shooting Association website that our Olympians recommend to help you become a better shooter.

Practice in conditions like those you’ll compete in. Kim Rhode knew the rainy London weather would present a challenge to those who weren’t accustomed to shooting in the rain, so she famously traveled from her sunny California range in search of nasty weather for practice.

Set goals. Vincent Hancock talks about 2011, after he had reached his 2008 Olympic goal and no longer knew what he wanted to do next. Without a goal, 2011 was his worst year of competition. Once he again established a goal, he was back on track for another gold.

Practice seriously. Kim’s husband points out that in competition, Kim shoots on autopilot. When she practices, she shoots her best, so in competition, it’s just like another day of practice. She’s relaxed and isn’t impacted by nerves.

Develop focus. Vincent’s focus during a round of skeet is obvious even to casual observers. Nothing distracts him.

Practice. A lot. Even their competitors from other countries are stunned by the amount Kim and Vincent practice. Kim describes shooting 800 to 1000 rounds a day — every day — and Vincent cites a practice schedule of 10 hours a day, seven days a week. It isn’t coincidental that they practice a lot and win gold medals.

Exude confidence. “I expect to win every time I compete,” Vincent says. “You can’t expect anything less.”
Shoot for the joy of it. Kim works hard to be the best at her sport, but she and her husband credit the joy of shooting as the real reason she’s medaled in five Olympics. She’s still having fun shooting.

Available over on Etsy from SupplybyChrit, the same makers of the IWB Kydex Flask Holster, these iPhone paracord cables go for $20 each and are available in black, coyote tan, foliage green, OD green, purple, pink, desert tan and turquoise. If you’re an iPhone/iPod user and a paracord junkie these are perfect for you. They come with 27 feet of paracord and according to the seller help reduce wear on the cable and reduce tangling, which always tends to happen with those cheapo Apple cables.

Camo Kindle Fire Protective Decals

I just got a new Kindle Fire (which I really like BTW) and I was shopping for some accessories for it. While there’s not as many gear out there for it compared to the Apple iPad, I did stumble upon these cool ACU Camo and Navy Digital Camo protective decals. They feature a satin finish and are smudge-proof and help reduce glare and fingerprints. They cover the front and back surfaces (not the screen) and help prevent scratches. If you’re a Kindle Fire user like me these are a must have to keep your Kindle scratch-free.  They go for $20 a pop plus shipping.

Red Dawn Official Trailer

Red Dawn Poster

I’m a fan of the original Red Dawn from the 80’s, so when word spread of a remake I was hoping they wouldn’t mess it up. While we don’t know if they’ve ruined a classic just yet, the official trailer for the Red Dawn remake is up on YouTube. The movie actually finished shooting back in 2009 but was delayed because of financial troubles at MGM, they also dropped $1 million to re-shoot and edit scenes to change the invaders from China to North Korea. Because it makes more sense that North Korea rather than China would mount a full on invasion of the United States, right?

What do you guys think of the trailer?

Free Syrian Army captures 5000 STG44s

48

If you’re a WWII history buff like I am this will absolutely blow your mind. The video below shows members of the Free Syrian Army who are fighting against the forces of Syrian “President” Bashar al-Assad that have stumbled upon a contrainer full of rifles. The rebel member who posted the video mistakenly claimed that they had found 5,000 AK-47s. Nope, turns out they stumbed upon 5,000 German WWII STG-44 rifles.

The Sturmgewehr 44 was the first assault rifle developed by Nazi Germany, how did so many end up in the Syrian desert? Who knows, maybe the Nazis imported them during the second world war. Maybe they found their way there via the black market. But if someone found a way to sell them to collectors the Free Syrian Army would be able to fund their efforts for quite some time!

Chances are these will be either used by the Syrian Rebels, or destroyed. The closest we’ll get owning an STG-44 in the US (minus a legal pre-ban imported one) is the .22lr version from GSG seen below.

Taliban Frankengun

4

Posted over at The NY Times, this Taliban Frankengun was recovered in the Wardak Province of Afghanistan. What is it? A quick look at this weapon you can make out the details of a Kalashnikov style dust cover and what looks like the barrel and front grip from an HK53. I wonder how well this Pakistani “Khyber Pass” gun actually fires? I dig the plastic sling, very tactical.

There was also this Frankengun in Iraq I posted a while back.

The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 2

1

I’m a big fan of The Walking Dead, both the comics and the TV series. I picked up the first The Walking Dead Compendium online last year, it’s basically the 48 comics in one giant book. I finished it within a few days and ever since I’ve been waiting for the second volume to come out. You can buy each comic individually, but I like the compendiums.

Well The Walking Dead Compendium Volume Two is now available for pre-sale over on Amazon! It covers issues 49 to 96.

In case you missed it check out our post about the guns of The Walking Dead.
