Korean War M1 Garands Approved For Importation

4

gran-torino-m1-garand

Back in September of 2009 there was word that South Korea was going to sell back M1 Garands and Carbines to the US, which we initially gave to them to help fight the Korean War. However, shortly afterwards the Obama administration shot that down along with the hopes of many collectors to get their hands on the new influx of M1 Garands and Carbines.

Looks like things have changed, 86,000 M1 Garands were approved for importation according to Lee Sun-chul, a deputy defense minister for force and resources management in Korea. However the Obama administration has still blocked the proposal to import 600,000 M1 Carbines because they have a magazine that can “carry multiple rounds”. I kid you not.

With the money that Korea will make from offloading M1’s to America they’ll be purchasing locally made K2 rifles. There’s still no word on how much these Korean War workhorses will go for, or even where we can buy them.

UFC Bans Guns and Ammo Sponsors

ufc-gun-sponsors-banned

Mixed Martial Art’s (MMA) biggest promotion the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recenlty banned all guns, knives, ammunition and hunting companies from sponsoring any of their events.

The ban stems from the UFC’s new seven-year deal with the FOX network which will give the UFC more mainstream exposure on FOX’s various channels. When the MMA blog CagePotato.com asked UFC president Dana White about the ban via Twitter he responsed with “hell no I have guns. Idk why? Haven’t heard that we stopped”. You’d think the president of the company would know such things?

Fighters in the UFC have had a good amount of firearms and hunting related sponsors over the years. Some of their biggest stars, former heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar and former welterweight champ Matt Hughes (who was at SHOT Show 2012 by the way) are avid hunters and are sponsored by a few firearms and hunting companies.

If the UFC wants to move into the mainstream with the likes of the NBA and the NFL it’s going to have to make its image more “family friendly” and accessible to the masses I suppose, as if two fighters trying to knock out or submit the other fighter will help that. It’s just unfortunate that this has to happen at the expense of the livelihood of the fighters in the UFC who will be missing out on potential sponsorship contracts. As I said above, stars like Hughes and Lesnar have lucrative sponsorship deals with various firearms companies. There are various other UFC fighters who are sponsored by gun related companies too, The Gun Store in Las Vegas alone sponsors many UFC fighters who rely mostly on sponsorship deals to pay the bills. This won’t only take a toll on UFC fighters however, the sponsors themselves will feel the pinch with this new ban. Millions of people watch UFC events worldwide and sponsoring a UFC fighter may be the only opportunity for a firearms company to reach such a large audience. Have you ever seen a DPMS or Otis commercial during halftime of a Laker game?

All of this is not surprising however, as the UFC did support SOPA, and if they will turn a blind eye to the First Amendment for the sake of their profits, not caring for other rights such as the Second Amendment is but a minor hurdle in their goal to be in the mainstream.

This just makes me miss the good old days of PRIDE FC.

EDIT!

Bill, an ArmoryBlog reader sent us this little exchange he had with UFC president Dana White via Twitter over the UFC’s ban of all firearms related sponsors. Instead of worrying who sponsors the UFC, maybe the UFC should worry about who’s sailing their ship?

G-Outdoors Handgunner Backpack

G Outdoors Handgunner Backpack

I spotted the new “Handgunnger” backpack from G-Outdoors while walking the floor of the 2012 SHOT Show and it immediately caught my eye. I thought to myself, “I could use one of those!”. When I go to the range I usually have at the very least 2 bags with me that I have to haul around, more depending on how many guns I’m bringing.

With the new Handgunner backpack there’s no need to fumble with separate bags or containers for your pistols, ammo and range gear. It’s an all-in-one solution when heading out to the pistol range. It has pockets for up to four full-size pistols, ammo, eye/ear protection, targets, stapler and pretty much all of your range gear and tools. It reminds me a lot of the DSLR camera backpacks that help you carry your DSLR body, lens, laptop etc all in one bag. The new Handgunnger backpack from G-Outdoors is due to hit the market in a few months, stay tuned for pricing and availability info as we get it. Check out goutdoorsproducts.com for more info on G-Outdoors and their product lines.

Colt debuted their new 1887 Bulldog Gatling Gun replica at the 2012 SHOT Show, they even let us fire off a few rounds at the Media Day at the Range. It was fun as heck cranking that handle and firing off shots of .45-70 from a piece of history first used over 130 years ago.

Zombie Apocalypse Hits SHOT Show 2012

SHOT-Show-2012-Zombie-Products

It seems like a ton of companies jumped on the zombie bandwagon at this years SHOT Show. I for one am pretty tired of all the hokey zombie themed products, and from the looks of the gun blogosphere is seems like many others agree with me. I saw a few at the Media Range day, I even posted about them last week. Then I saw a few more while walking the floor at SHOT. Then I couldn’t walk through one of the various exhibit rooms at SHOT without seeing some sort of product that made your zombie killing experience more efficient.

The zombie craze needs to stop, or at least be more thought out. One thing I’ve noticed in the firearms industry is the real old school mentality when it comes to marketing products with some companies. You wouldn’t believe how many companies snubbed us at the SHOT Show because we weren’t print media, just lowly bloggers. Newsflash to the marketing managers at all the major gun and gear makers out there, the internet is here to stay, learn to embrace it. Back on topic, the zombie craze is just one indication of the industry grasping at straws to market their “new” products. Slap on a zombie image or some green paint and voila! You have a new product or even a new product line.

The plethora of new zombie products seen at this years SHOT Show tells me that A) my thoughts that gun and gear makers are stuck in the past with the way they market their products and are late to the party as usual, B) they’re running out of new product ideas, or C) people actually want this stuff. I really hope it’s not C.

Lou Ferrigno With a Barrett

I ran into Mr. Ferrigno checking out a Barrett .50 caliber rifle at the 2012 SHOT Show, he actually makes the beastly Barrett .50cal seem like a normal sized rifle. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to see Lou when he’s angry, especially with that rifle!

This Gun is Like Ron Paul

I usually don’t like to post about politics, but that sign has a point. Dr. Paul is also the most 2nd Amendment friendly candidate. That’s a mighty fine looking rifle too.
