If you didn’t read the title of this post who would you have thought was the largest importer of fighter jets and naval ships? China? Nope, they’re number two. India has just overtaken China as the world’s largest arms importer, with the United States, Russia and Germany being the largest arms exporters.
According to the report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, India accounted for 9 percent of all international arms imports in the period from 2006 to 2010, and it is expected to keep the top spot for the foreseeable future.
India wants to become a regional power, and with their neighbors being China and their rival Pakistan, that means they need a lot of advanced weapons. India is spending billions of dollars to keep up with their neighbors as China starts to become a major player on the world stage. India spent 1.5 trillion rupees ($32.5 billion) which was a 40 percent increase from two years before. They’re currently waiting for delivery on French Mirage 2000 fighter jets, six submarines and a refurbished aircraft carrier from Russia. That alone is more firepower than most of the worlds militaries.
