AR-15 pistols are growing in popularity it seems and a lot of manufactures are starting to take notice. AR pistols can be a bit awkward to shoot at first however, one method is to push the end of the buffer tube against your shoulder and use the tube to rest your cheek. It’s my prefered way to shoot AR pistols, but it can be a bit uncomfortable with the buffer tube digging into your shoulder. Exile Machine’s rubber pistol buffer tube cap helps to alleviate this. They have them in 1.25″ and 1″ diameter and they retail at only $5. They’re fully legal and not considered a buttstock by the ATF. You can even wrap some paracord around the buffer tube to help increase comfort just like in the top image. Check out the caps over at Exilemachine.net.

  1. They also sell various foam and rubber pads to hide under the cap (or under their closed-tip tube covers). Their website says they’re to protect your “valuable” buffer tube, but they briefly stated on their facebook account that these are to absorb recoil when shouldered. That’s a little too close to “designed and intended to be fired from the shoulder” for my comfort.

It’s now May, and we know the Sig brace is legal, even for shoulder-fire. These caps are a thing of the past, and don’t really have much of a justification beyond helping to shoulder a pistol. At least the Sig brace has another purpose than just as a stock work around.

  2. What a nifty idea! We should call it, ummm….hmmm…. a butt? hehehe butt. yes. it shall thusly be called the butt of the rifle.
